Many Returns: Chartreuse at MISE_EN_PLACE

  • MISE_EN_PLACE 678 Hart Street Brooklyn, NY, 11221 United States (map)

Come hear two NYC premieres of substantial works by composers from across the pond (across many ponds?). Tyler Futrell's "Technology of Muses" is the fruit of one of Chartreuse's longest relationships: his "String Trio for Bill" was the first trio we played! Aaron Holloway-Nahum's "It Is Important to Be Able To Return" explores form and repetition by systematically using contours and patterns found in nature to create familiarity without monotony. We'll also be premiering Columbia composer Matthew Ricketts' rollicking, rambunctious "Another Round." Chicago-based Bethany Younge’s "waterswaterwaters" (subtitled “sinking flowing drifting”) is a dark reflecting pool, ranging from totally still to a roiling vortex. The three musicians shout, hum, and murmur, and their instruments mimic those vocal gestures in a twisted reflection. It is up to the listener to tell which version is above the water and which exists only below the enigmatic surface...
